Golden Globe Complaints In 5... 4... 3... 2...
With the blink of an eye, movie awards season is here.
The Screen Actors Guild released their nominees this week. The Golden Globe nominees came out today. The Academy Awards will be annoncing thier picks before the end of the month.
Today I focus on the Globes, or as I call them, the Oscars-lite. Here's the list.
I'll keep my complaints to a minimum against the Hollywood Foreign Press. Who are these mystery people that hand out the Globes anyway?
In any case...
In the category of Best Motion Picture - Drama, the nominees are:
The Descendants (2011)
The Help (2011)
The Ides of March (2011)
War Horse (2011)
Hugo is the misfit here. It's a movie deserving of your respect, but it's not a dramatic work. It's more like a kids fantasy-adventure that gets to sit at the big boy table because of it's director: Martin Scorsese.
In the category of Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, the nominees are:
The Artist (2011)
Midnight in Paris (2011)
My Week with Marilyn (2011)
I haven't seen The Artist yet, but I know it's a silent film, which makes it odd to also be nominated for Best Screenplay. What was on the screenplay? 50/50 is about a the lighter side of cancer, but I don't really consider it a comedy. My Week With Marilyn is a fantastic vehicle for Michelle Williams, who plays Marilyn Monroe in it. Again, I don't consider it to be a comedy.
I'm glad these movies are mention worthy, because I liked them all. I wouldn't put too much into the idea that the Golden Globes are Oscar predictors. The Globes have been wrong for the last two years running. Avatar as the Best of 2009? Come on.
The TV categories are even more ridiculous. Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Community were all snubbed. Booooooooo to you HFP!
At least there's this Breaking Bad video to ease the pain:
