Is Amazon Looking to Buy Target?

One Analyst Thinks So

January 2, 2018

Is Amazon planning on buying Target? It could happen, according to some industry experts.

Amazon continues to dominate and grow every single year. Last year, the online giant stepped into the retail space when they purchased Whole Foods grocery stores. Well, now there may be "a target" on another popular retailer.

Amazon could be looking to purchase the Target brand. The speculation stems from a prediction made by an industry analyst, Loup Ventures' Gene Munster.

He says that this would be an ideal situation that could make both brands even stronger than they already are today.

"Amazon believes the future of retail is a mix of mostly online and some offline.," Munster wrote on Monday.

The shared demographics between the two brands and Target's manageable (but comprehensive) store count could make this move an attractive one for Amazon.

The move could have Walmart shaking their boots a little bit. Walmart has more than 4,700 stores, but a combined brand of Amazon and Target's 1,834 stores could level the playing field when you add in Whole Foods stores across the country.

For what it's worth, Munster doesn't have any connection to either brand. His prediction, however, sent the value of Target's stock up on Tuesday. So it's safe to say that the industry is paying attention to this idea.
